Girl Scouts at City Hall
On April 27th, Tatiana and a couple of her Girl Scout friends, Lily and Katie, went to the City Hall meeting to conduct the opening flag ceremony. Everyone, especially the Mayor was very impressed. They all did a fantastic job!

Scouting Stuff
I was mistaken. I thought I was done with March, but then I went to the April photo folder and a bunch of March photos were accidentally in there. I knew there was more to March, but the whole first part of the year has been a blur for the most part. So here we go, continuing on with March.
On March 9th, Tatiana and her Girl Scout troop held a forum. They envited several influential women from the community, including the mayor, a vetranarian, a doctor, another woman who works for the school district (cannot, for the life of me, remember her title), and their beloved school teacher! The girls asked questions such as; "How long have you known you wanted to be a _____?", "Were there any obstacles to your profession that you encountered as a woman, and if so how did you overcome them?", "What type of women stereotypes have you had to deal with in your life and how do you think any of them have changed since you were a kid?" and What advice do you have for us as we look forward to the future?"

They received excellent answers and were basically given the advice that you should never let anyone else define who you are or what you want to become. You should never give up on your dreams. Sometimes the things that are really worth it require a lot of effort and hard work to achieve. Women have come a long way in our society and they should be proud to be girls and embrace it, but it isn't wise to "compete" with men because men and women are different. Each is better at different thing, neither one can be better at all things, so just be YOUR best! I thought this was an excellent opportunity for the girls.

On March 17th Nick had the opportunity to meet with our State Representative, Andy Olsen. Andy was meeting with a small group of parents at my friend's home to talk about the state funding problem with education. We wanted to get some straight answers of what they were attempting to do in Salem about our continual decrees in funds over the last few bienniums and we got some satisfying answers. Hopefully some of their plans will work and things will turn around for our education funding! There were only ten of us parents there and Nick was the only youth. I explained that he was coming along as part of one of his Boy Scout merit badge requirements and Andy seemed impressed to see him there. This was a unique opportunity for him. Most boys pass this requirement off by going to a City Council meeting, but Nick was able to be in a smaller setting, ask questions and be heard, and meet our State Representative. Not many 12 year olds can say they have been in a situation like that. Both Nick and I really like Andy Olson, he was very kind and straight forward. He not only did NOT avoid the questions, he elaborated on them more than we would ever expect helping us to understand things to a deeper level. We really appreciated that and Nick learned a lot about government in one evening.

Tatiana's Girl Scout Trip to Seaside!!!
On November 12th and 13th I went with Tatiana and her Girl Scout troop out to Seaside, Oregon for a FUN weekend on the beach! I absolutely LOVE spending time with my sweet daughter! The whole weekend they were doing a lot of things to pass off their "Art in 3D" badge.
We took the girls out to the sand and they built sandcastles as part of their badge. I loved Tatiana's. She is such a funny girl, when her tower came out leaning, she named it! "The Leaning Tower of Seaside", such a sense of humor!

I also made 5 batches of homemade air hardening clay for another craft project. They were to make something decorative or useful from air hardening clay. It was fun. I also scented the clay with peppermint extract so it made the place smell good too!

We roasted marshmallows, had s'mores, and sang campfire songs. Their was a fire pit right outside the back door of our little cabin. It was a perfect night!

I was able to score some free passes to the Seaside Aquarium. The girls seemed to have a good time. It is just a little place, but it claims to be the oldest aquarium on the west coast. And the girls liked to feed the friendly seals and they thought this octopus (pictured below) was pretty cool too.

We took our pancakes left over from breakfast and fed the vultures...er, I mean sea gulls...ha ha. Those were some crazy, funny, and greedy birds!

We took the girls to the arcade and let them play a couple of games. That was fun too!

Here is the group in front of our little cabin. They are such a good bunch of girls!

We also let them go swimming at the public pool. They had a great time there.

One of the other leaders, Rachel, brought an article about a boy who has cancer and his goal is to get 5,000 paper cranes to decorate the children's cancer ward where he receives his treatment. She read the story to the girls and they all enthusiastically started to fold paper cranes to donate to him. Rachel mailed them to him. I think we ended up folding over 70 cranes!

Way to go girls!!!!

Baking soda and cornstarch make a smooth, pliable play clay that can be colored with everyday food coloring - or left white and painted once it hardens. When you have made your model, leave it to air dry - turning every 12 hours or so.
Place ingredients in a pan and stir until smooth. Set the pan over a medium heat and stir until boiling. Stir out any lumps and cook until it is the consistency of mashed potatoes.
Turn out onto a plate and cover with a damp, well-wrung kitchen towel - let cool. Dust a work surface with cornstarch and knead until pliable. Add food coloring and scent if you want when you are needing it. Use rubber gloves if you are adding food coloring!!!

I am so proud of my Tatiana! I have a side story to share. I told her that I would be leaving on Saturday night so I could come back and go to church on Sunday. The rest of the troop was leaving on Sunday morning right after breakfast and clean up. She was quite torn between wanting to come home with me and go to church or listen to all her friends who were begging her to stay. She decided to come home with me. I was impressed with her choice so I let her stay until it was bedtime and then we headed home. That way she could have as much fun as possible and only miss the "read by a flashlight until you fall asleep" and breakfast and clean up. I ended up having a rather stressful fog filled drive over the mountains, but we made it home safely at about 12:30 in the morning. But I am glad we stayed for her, I am so glad she came home with me, and I am very glad Nathan let me have a nap after church on Sunday!
"Tatiana, you are such a great example! I love you!"
Oh, and here is the homemade air-hardening clay recipe, in case anyone wants it...
1 cup cornstarch (cornflour)
1.5 cups cold water
(makes about 2 pounds - the recipe can be halved).
